Degu
Sometimes referred to as "the poor mans chinchilla",
degus are a very social, inquisitive little animal. Seven inches long,
they have a brown agouti coat. Active during the day,
they enjoy company and are best kept in pairs or in groups.
Capable of numerous unique vocal sounds, they will entertain you for hours.
Degus have a peaceful presence about them when they are interacting with each other.
Tremendously enjoyable to watch and handle!
Degus require a minimum cage size of 1'x1'x2'. They need to be kept in a wire cage because they can chew thru plastic.
Cage "furniture" should consist of a few non-toxic pieces of tree limb, a 2" cube of pumice stone for chewing, and a 9" ferret wheel for exercise.
Once a week a squatty fish bowl with 1 tablespoon of chinchilla dust can be given for them to roll in.
Feed a high quality guinea pig food. Give fresh sweet potato, fresh soybeans, dark green leafy vegetables and one-half raw peanut per day.
Degus should be kept at room temperatures between 65F-75F.
Mount water bottle to the outside of the cage so they don't chew on it.
